Roy Benavidez NO--Roy was not in the Navy but perhaps you would like to see what he did to deserve the honor of having a ship named for him. The Navy named a ship in honor of Roy--a Medal of Honor recipient. The USNS Benavidez was christened in New Orleans on 21 July 2001 and I was invited to attend this wonderful event. Go to Military-Network to read the article about the day's events. In the Spring of 2003 the USNS Benavidez left dry dock and steamed down the Mississippi--photo on left. The photo on the right was taken in September 2003 when the ship hit the open waters. Click on the photos to enlarge them! There was a photo of this ship recently in NAVY 230 on page 120 showing that it was filled with supplies and equipment of the 1st Cavalry Division while stopped in the Philippines to support the War on Terror.
